Onion Red Baron Seeds – Mr Fothergills

Great flavour and quality

High yields of attractive blood-red globes which have an excellent flavour. Stores well.

A Best Buy variety as recommended by the Gardening Press and Consumer Groups.

Recommended by Will Livingstone (River Cottage head gardener) in BBC Gardeners World Magazine (January 2015 edition):
“Grows well from seeds or sets and rarely disappoints in cold or wet weather. It has upright foliage and a large, sweet bulb that is resistant to neck rot.”

Average 150 seeds

Sow & Grow:

Outdoors: Sow thinly March-April, where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½”) deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-dug, fertile soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30cm (1′) between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Thin plants to 23cm (9″) apart. Transplant thinnings or use in salads. Or sow indoors, January-April, for larger bulbs, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, in a tray of seed compost. Water well and maintain a temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F). Keep moist. Transplant, 5cm (2”) apart, to other trays when large enough to handle. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 23cm (9″) apart, during April-May. Harvest: August-September.
