Blackberry Merton Thornless 3 Litre Pot

Mid season thornless variety. Generous cropper of medium to large sized fruit with excellent flavour. Due to its compact growth, Merton is an ideal variety for planting in small gardens and the short thornless canes make maintance simple. Foe best results, plant in half shade or full sun although Merton will tolerate shade and soil with less than efficient drainage. Hardy but can be vulnerable to hard frosts on very exposed sites.

Eventual height; 2.5m (8ft). Eventual spread; 7m (23ft). Cropping season; August/September. Self fertile.

Prepare area before planting by digging over and mixing organic manure or compost into the top soil. Plant as soon as possble after purchase, provided weather conditions are suitable. Soak bush for 2 hours in water and plant to the depth of the soil mark on the stem, tread in firmly and water.

To encourage vigorous new growth and help establishment cut all stems back to 30cm (1ft) above ground at planting time. To prune therefore each winter just cut out the dead canes that fruited previous Summer and train in the new, tying them onto the supprt wires from where they will produce their fruiting spurs the following Summer. Mulch yearly with rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water in dry periods. Apply a growmore type fertiliser in the spring.
